ORIGINAL PRINTS
I can hear you thinking, “Original designs…does JANICE design them herself?” I get that it sounds like a given, but designing our own prints as a brand is a conscious choice. It’s not the easiest choice, but it definitely feels like the best one.
As a brand, it’s very easy to have all kinds of manufacturers and suppliers deliver everything to you ready-made. The fabric comes ready with prints and color variations—you just have to specify how many meters you want, and that’s it… but for us, that’s not an option. You either design or you don’t, and those prints—that’s the foundation for us; that’s where it all starts!
JANICE is known for its use of color and prints. A piece of clothing or an outfit can turn a bad day into a good one, and if one of our prints can help with that even a little, then we’ll shine even brighter.
At the start of the design process, we first create mood boards with ideas and colors that appeal to us. Then we sit down with the design team to decide which themes we’ll develop. Once we’ve decided on the themes, we get to work and develop dozens of design studies. Off go all the items from the mood board, and up go the studies. The next step is to select the final prints and match them to the color themes where they fit best.
THE ORIGIN OF OUR OWN PRINTS
It all started 10 years ago, when, for one of my first collections, I had a lining printed for all the women’s coats and blazers. My passion for design stems in part from the fact that my mother couldn’t find clothes that suited her, so when I had the opportunity to design my own lining, I wanted to go back to the basics—what really matters on the “inside”… my roots, my family.
I had found a box at my mother’s house containing love letters from her grandfather to her grandmother, along with a whole stack of photos from that time. I found this so amazing that I had them scanned and made a print of them. How wonderful it was for my mother to wear a beautiful JANICE blazer with a lining full of memorabilia and memories of her grandparents, as a tribute.
FROM THE INSIDE OUT
Every season, I designed a lining that became characteristic of that season—a USP, something that stood out and was instantly recognizable. After about 10 seasons, I designed a sticker print as a lining—a print inspired by a utility box plastered with stickers that I’d spotted in Amsterdam. When this print was finished and the lining arrived ready to use, my husband said, “ “This print is so cute—you have to make a viscose women’s blouse and dress out of it too!” Okay, to be completely honest, I didn’t immediately agree with this idea, but I’m so glad I went along with it in the end, because this was our next breakthrough… the print became an instant hit! Even now, everyone would love to have another version of that sticker print, but it’s what put us on the map as a brand—a fashion label that designs its own recognizable prints…and what a print it is!
VISCOSE SELECTION
Once the print selection is finalized, the next step is deciding which print to use for which viscose fabric. Choosing the right print for the right fabric is quite a process. Which viscose fabric will become a blouse, which will we use for dresses, and what works best for a women’s skirt? Of course, you can also use different types of viscose for a dress. For example, there’s a viscose crepe that’s a bit fuller and works well for a dress, but there’s also a viscose crepe that’s perfect for a light, airy women’s blouse or skirt.
For our women’s viscose blouses,
we use a lighter weight fabric, and for the women’s viscose dresses, a slightly fuller, heavier weight fabric. In our opinion, a blouse doesn’t need to be too thick—it should be nice and airy so you can easily wear it under a cardigan or blazer. The viscose women’s dresses
are slightly airy and breathable thanks to the viscose, but they aren’t see-through.
The viscose fabrics we use regulate temperature, so you won’t sweat excessively while wearing them.
COLORFUL WOMEN’S CLOTHING
As I’ve said before, “Your clothes can turn a bad day into a good one!” The clothes you wear can influence your day and how you feel. If you have a job interview, you’ll choose a specific outfit; if you’re going on a first date, you’ll dress appropriately for the occasion; and if you’re having a bad day, wearing the right clothes can shift your mood so that, before you know it, you’ll be walking around with a smile on your face.
We design the JANICE collection for women who love life but often take it with a grain of salt. For women who are confident and want—and deserve—to be seen. She wants to stand out from the crowd and prioritizes quality over quantity.
KEY-PIECE PRINT
A key piece can give your outfit that extra something. When someone is wearing a key piece, it’s the first thing that catches your eye—and only then do you notice the rest of the outfit. When done right, the key piece gives you a sense of power and maybe even a twinkle in your eye.
That’s why we feature a key-piece print in our collection every season—this season, it’s the Eclectic Print. Pictured here is the Dylan Eclectic, a colorful women’s blouse made from the finest viscose, which we’ve had printed with our own custom design. Pair the blouse with jeans—white, blue, or gray—and a pair of sneakers, along with a leather biker jacket or a denim jacket, and you’ll be the star of the day!
ANIMAL PRINTS
If there’s one thing that’s here to stay in the fashion world, it’s animal prints. Leopard and zebra prints are leading the way this season. The JANICE collection also features zebra and leopard prints. Black and white is always a safe bet, and the blue leopard version we’ve created has a nice, fresh look.
We hope you appreciate our efforts—not just the explanations, but also the meticulous development of the entire collection.
Love
, JANICE
