Wool is made from animal fur, though not all animals have hair suitable for making wool. Most of the wool we sell comes from sheep, though there are also many other animals that provide us with wool. For example, there are many types of wool made from the hair of goats, alpacas, and llamas.
Sheep’s Wool
The best-known type of wool is sheep’s wool. Sheep are sheared every year to turn their fleece into wool. There are various breeds of sheep, each offering a different type of wool with distinct characteristics and qualities. One example is Merino wool, from one of the most important sheep breeds in the world. The Merino sheep is known for its fine, high-quality wool. Super-soft alpaca wool
Alpacas are very popular these days for their fleece. They’re related to llamas and live mainly in Peru and Bolivia. Alpaca wool is among the most expensive types of wool in the world. That’s because alpaca wool is incredibly soft—since it contains no lanolin—and feels like silk. The wool is lightweight yet surprisingly warm.
Clothing made from alpaca wool fits well, retains its shape, and doesn’t pill. Alpaca clothing is very durable. It’s no surprise that you pay more for it than for other types of wool. Baby alpaca wool is even softer than that of an adult alpaca because it is harvested from the first shearing. After that, the structure of the alpaca wool changes. This makes the wool even more expensive than regular alpaca.
Mohair and Cashmere Wool
Wool is also made from the coats of goats. The best-known types of wool are mohair from the Angora goat, cashmere from the cashmere goat, and pashmina from the Chyangra mountain goat. Mohair has a beautiful sheen and sometimes appears to sparkle slightly. Because of this, mohair is also known as the “diamond fiber.” Furthermore, this type of wool is flame-resistant, durable, and has natural elasticity. It also hardly wrinkles at all and won’t felt. Mohair is generally more expensive than regular wool.
