Janice’s cashmere sweaters are a hit this season! How sustainable do you want it to be? When our wool supplier called to ask if we wanted to make women’s sweaters from recycled cashmere, we were over the moon!
In our search for sustainable partners and manufacturers, these are the gems we come across. We’ve used this recycled cashmere to create a gorgeous sweater: The Brody. A super-soft women’s cashmere sweater with an incredibly refined knit. Beautiful cuffs, a round neckline, and—most notably—rich, set-in shoulders.
If you look closely at the shoulders, you’ll see they’re knitted from the left. This creates the effect of shoulder pads, but there aren’t any.
The fabric is incredibly soft, and the colors are timeless. You can wear these sweaters not just now, but they’re also beautiful in other seasons. All the colors look great with jeans, leather pants, white jeans, dress pants, or even a skirt.

Cashmere Care
Many washing machines have a “cashmere” setting—ours does too. I never use it. I always hand-wash cashmere.
Most hand-wash detergents aren’t suitable for wool and silk: this is noted in tiny print on the back of the package. So it’s important to find the right detergent. Too much fabric softener, fragrance, and chlorine-based ingredients are bad for cashmere.
Wash your cashmere garments separately from each other, in a separate basin.
I fill the basin with lukewarm water and detergent, then add a sweater, cardigan, dress, scarf, or poncho. Let it soak overnight so it can soak thoroughly. Rinse it out thoroughly in the morning.
Most wool products specify that they should be hand-washed. However, modern washing machines have good wool wash cycles. Note: 30°C wash cycles and delicate wash cycles are not suitable for washing wool; it must be a separate wool wash cycle.
If you wash the item in the machine, it may shrink slightly; this varies by washing machine. If you know your own machine well, you’ll know whether you need to buy the item a size larger or not. But this is only possible with a special wool wash cycle.
DETERGENT
Use a special wool detergent for wool (not Biotex: the enzymes in Biotex break down proteins). If you’re hand-washing, the following is very important: wool shrinks (due to felting) as a result of temperature differences and friction. So if you wash the wool in lukewarm soapy water (max 30°C), you must also rinse it in lukewarm water!
Do not wring out the wool; instead, gently squeeze it and/or roll it dry in a towel. After washing, gently reshape the garment and let it dry flat (on a towel) for the best results.
- Do not put wool in the dryer (it will shrink).
- Do not place or hang wool in direct sunlight (it will discolor).
- Do not leave wool soaking in water for days (this will cause holes to form).
How to Style the Brody
